LOCATION Art Studios
During this 8 week course James will introduce participants to the various techniques and tools involved in the ancient art of carving stone. Initially working in soapstone, participants will then produce larger relief carvings in sandstone. James will share insights from his experience of working on public art projects across Scotland including an opportunity to see a current piece as it nears completion. Participants will learn about the properties of different stones and will work with a variety of tools including chisels, mallets, files and rifflers. This course is suitable for beginners and those with some carving experience. It will be structured to respond to the interests and abilities of the class and to explore creativity through stone.
All materials and tools will be supplied including safety equipment. Please wear appropriate clothing.
James Winnett is an artist working primarily in public art, sculpture and film. He has developed a range of public art projects across the UK. Recent commissions, exhibitions and awards include The Lenton Priory Stone, Nottingham, 2018; Luminate and Erskine Artist in Residence, Scotland, 2017-; The Capelrig Stones, East Renfrewshire Council, 2017; The Cuningar Stones, South Lanarkshire, 2014-17.
