Beyond the Blue Spot: Textiles collaboration and textiles networks

EXHIBITION TALKS PROGRAMME

Rose Sinclair

STUDIO PAVILION
Tuesday 3 September 2019
6 – 7pm

We’re excited to announce a series of talks that have been programmed alongside Rachel Adams & Tessa Lynch’s collaborative exhibition Stoop, Stoop, Stooping is Stoopid!” on display in the Studio Pavilion at House for an Art Lover. This series delivered by a variety of academics, writers, artists and historians aims to expand upon some of the artists’ research interests as well as provide an insight into a variety of subjects touched upon by the exhibition.

In this talk academic and artist Rose Sinclair will discuss Dorcas Clubs as gendered making spaces where women formed textile groups and networks that initiated social change, and what lessons could be applied in thinking about how textile groups operate today. Reflecting on how the history of Dorcas Clubs and Societies can influence contemporary textiles networks and collaborative practices Rose will draw on the history of Glaswegian women who used these clubs and textiles to move textiles practice from the domestic to the public space. Rose’s current PhD research focus is on the use of Dorcas Clubs and Societies and their use as a catalyst for black women to navigate safe textiles making spaces.

Rose Sinclair is a Design Lecturer (Textiles) at Goldsmiths, University of London, and Programme Leader for the BA in Creativity, Design and Learning. She also teaches Textiles/Fashion and Design related practice at Postgraduate level. Rose has authored several textile books, her most recent being Textiles and Fashion, Materials, Design and Technology (2015). Her current research focuses on black British women and their crafting practices, and aesthetics. She uses installations and crafting workshops to discuss issues of gender, race, heritage, authenticity, identity, and settlement.

Refreshments will be served at the event.
